Art Books/ Creative Challenges

for both drawing one and drawing two, you will be making an art book. these art books must be at least 9X12 and will hold all of our class materials (handouts, skill building, creative challenges). You will be given directions on how to assemble your art book, and you will then decorate the cover. make it your own!

Covers:

Drawing One- Separate your cover into different sections using stencils. Come up with 10 different types of line and 5 doodles that describe you and/or your interests.

Drawing TWO- Create a drawing that expands to both the front and back cover of your art book. This doodle/design should incorporate skills you acquired in Drawing One and show your personality.

 

 

Write CC number, idea number or brief description, and date on the table you glued into your art book. CC's will be checked along with art books at the conclusion of each unit. You should have at least 1 CC per unit.  

 

The purpose of a sketchbook is to strengthen your drawing skills, encourage you to look harder at things, use your imagination, explore techniques that interest you, and challenge you.

the weekend is a good time to get caught up and explore interesting mediums.     

 

 In addition to the unit creative challenges, you are encouraged to fill this space with your own work and drawings of your choice.  Use your sketchbook as a place to let out your ideas and thoughts.

 

Each creative challenge should take at least 30 to 45 minutes and must be done on your own time, unless you are finished with your project. creative challenges are worth 10 points each.  

 

You will receive up to 10 points for drawings that meet the following expectations: 

  1. Drawing must fill the entire page.

  2. Drawing must have full color or shading.

  3. you may choose a creative challenge only once- no duplicate topics.

  4. Must be original… no copies or tracing.

  5. Use drawing pencils intended for sketching.

  6. Set the scene, include a background.

  7. Spend at least 30 minutes on each page.

  8. don’t rely on your eraser, sketches should be “sketchy”.

  9. experience a wide variety of materials – pencil, pen, collage, paint…

 

Consider using your sketchbook as an extension of your personality as well as continuing to improve your artistic skills.

  22. Pick a flower or part of a plant and draw it from direct observation

  23. Draw a grouping of three objects (still life), draw them how you see them, not individually (ex. apple, pear, banana) 

  24. Draw a piece of cake and make it look delicious 

  25. Draw one large popcorn kernel; draw a bag of popcorn with pop splitting out

  26. Draw your favorite CD cover, 

  27. Create a new cover for your favorite CD

  31. Look through a kaleidoscope and draw what your see, or make up your own design

  36. Draw a room/hallway in one point perspective

  37. Lie on the floor/ground and draw what you see

  40.  Draw a picture of your Mother or Father at work.

  41. Draw a person by the light cast by the TV or computer screen

  45. Create a collage. Look through magazines and cut out pictures and words that best describe you. Then glue the pictures and words down to your sketchbook page. Overlap the images and make sure to leave no white areas. 

  46. Change the size relationship (scale) of two things and draw them next to each other. (ex.. a large bug the same size as a building)

  47. Draw a portrait of your best friend

  49. Make a portrait of yourself as you see yourself in twenty years

  51. Draw an object by drawing only the negative space. Negative space is the area around the object, also known as the back ground.                                                  

  52. Cut out a photo/image into small pieces, rearrange the photo in some other order, draw it

  53.   Draw a table and chair 

  54. Illustrate your favorite poem

  55. Drawing of a house plant (real or artificial)

  56. Draw an object with a surface texture

  57. Draw tools used in certain professions (ex. Paint brush, pencil, sketchbook)

  60. Draw a large jar and fill it up with something (candy, toys, rocks, etc)

  61. Pick a holiday and draw a scene for it    

  62. Draw your favorite snack food- you make draw it large than life 

  63. Draw a food item, them eat half of it, and then draw it

  66. Draw a tennis shoe or boat  in full detail

  76. Draw something in a camouflage setting (ex. A bug on a leaf, a lizard on a rock, you in your room.)  

  77. Cut a picture into small pieces, rearrange the picture in a different order, and then draw it.

  78. Draw an invention you would like to create

  79. Find a magazine image, cut it in half, glue half the image down to the sketchbook page, and redraw the missing half.

  80. Expressive line drawing-Using a pencil, try to make as many different types of lines as possible, repeating each type of line several times. Try all types of line: wavy, curly, jagged, dashes, thick, thin, etc. Fill up the entire page with as many lines as you can.

  81. Find a photo of yourself and draw your self-portrait

  103. Draw a picture.  Cut your picture into squares.  Glue the squares in a new design.

  105. Create your own storyboard/ comic strip.

  106. Draw your favorite cartoon character with background. 

  107. Create a new cover for the book you are now reading 

  108. Think of a funny joke and draw it (ex. Why did the chicken cross the road) 

  109. FANTASY DRAWING – Create a fantasy building, creature, or landscape.

  110. Fill the page with a variety of lettering styles (ex. Bubble letters) . Be creative! Find a poem – a favorite song - a list of favorite sayings – 

  111. Illustrate a two-word phrase using drawings of objects related to its meaning. 

  112. Freedom draw- You may draw anything you want- You May use this only one time

  113. draw something on a unusual surface, something that was not meant to turned into a piece of art, something that you find and recycle such as a newspaper, a receipt, a sign, etc.
